How Much Does It Cost to File Bankruptcy?

The Cost of filing bankruptcy depends on whether you're filing Chapter 7 or Chapter 13.

Let's briefly go over Chapter 7. To keep it simple, the total cost ranges around $1200-$1500.

You basically have 4 price components:

• • The filing fee to the court is $335.
• • Your credit check is $35.
• • The cost of taking a first and second on-line credit counseling course ranges between $5-$25 each.
• • The remaining amount is my fee. My fee depends to a certain degree how much work the filing will take.

Here's an important point to remember, while I'm happy to accept payments toward filing your Chapter 7, your entire fee needs to paid before I can actually file for you.

Second, I'm going to keep Chapter 13 as simple as my explanation of Chapter 7.

Again, you have 4 price components:

• • The filing fee to the court is $310.
• • Your credit check will be either $33 or $50 depending on whether it's individual or joint.
• • The cost of taking a first and second on-line credit counseling course ranges between $5-$25 each.
• • The remaining cost, which is my fee, depends on the amount of work it takes to complete your Chapter 13 bankruptcy. Everyone is a little different.

A plus for filing Chapter 13 is that you do not need to pay my fee up front to get started like Chapter 7. Most of the time, it only takes a $281 filing fee, plus the credit check to begin. The remaining amount due is typically spread out over 3 years on a monthly payment schedule.
